FAQs

What type of fire extinguisher is best for home use?

A multi-purpose ABC-rated fire extinguisher is recommended for most homes because it can handle the three most common types of household fires—those involving ordinary combustibles like wood, paper and fabric (A), flammable liquids (B), and electrical equipment (C) — making them versatile for kitchens, garages, and living spaces.

How many fire extinguishers do I need?

It’s recommended by the NFPA to have at least one fire extinguisher on every level of your home, including the kitchen and garage. Place them in easy to reach areas like under the kitchen sink and near exits or along escape routes so they’re easy to access in an emergency.

How often do fire extinguishers need to be inspected?

Home fire extinguishers should be visually inspected each month to ensure they’re ready for use—check that the pressure gauge is in the green zone, the pin and tamper seal are intact, and there’s no visible damage or obstruction. If the pressure gauge is in the red or the fire extinguisher is damaged, replace it immediately or get it serviced by a certified equipment dealer.

A professional maintenance inspection should also be conducted annually to verify that all components are working properly.

How long does a fire extinguisher last?

First Alert rechargeable fire extinguishers last 10 or 12 years, depending on the model (please see the product warranty), when properly stored and maintained. Disposable models should be replaced at the end of their lifespan, while rechargeable models can be refilled by a certified technician.

When should you use a fire extinguisher?

Use a fire extinguisher only for small, contained fires when you have a clear escape path and the correct type of extinguisher for the fire. Remember the P.A.S.S. method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side. If the fire grows or you feel unsafe, evacuate immediately and call 911.
